Meet Mrs. Rushing

Teaching is a second career for Mrs. Rushing. Her first degree was in marketing from the University of Tennessee. She then worked in sales for Northrop Grumman Remotec, a hazardous duty robotics company in Clinton. After leaving Remotec, she worked for PIPS Technology, a company that designed and manufactured automatic license plate recognition systems.

After several years in the business world, Mrs. Rushing followed a call to teach. She completed a K-6 licensure program through South College and then began working at St. John Neumann Catholic School. She then received an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. This is Mrs. Rushing’s tenth year at SJNCS. She feels truly blessed to be teaching in such a wonderful community with supportive staff and exceptional children and loves working at a school centered in faith.

After teaching second and third grade, Mrs. Rushing made the leap to middle school this year. She is excited about the challenges and opportunities she will face with her former students this year. She is also teaching K-4 technology and is enthusiastic about integrating coding and robotics into the curriculum.

Mrs. Rushing and her husband live in Lenoir City and attend St. Thomas the Apostle parish. Their son Tyler will be four in January. Tyler keeps his parents very busy, and he can’t wait to attend SJNCS next fall.

What We're Learning This Year

5th grade Science

The students will continue to expand their knowledge on familiar topics in life, physical, and earth sciences with a STEM approach. The lessons will be more application oriented simulating how science and engineering are applied in real life. We will go deeper into topics as opposed to covering many topics on a surface level.

The resources for science include a Science Handbook and Be a Scientist Notebook. In the notebook, students will practice being real scientists and engineers by presenting creative solutions to real-world problems. There will be a heavy emphasis on active participation in labs and performance tasks.

5th grade Social Studies

Students will learn the essential elements and themes of Geography. In fifth grade, the focus will be the Western Hemisphere. More specifically, we will learn locations of states and countries and how location plays a key role in the lives of people living in a specific place. Also, we will look at how people interact with and change their environment. In the spring, we will incorporate the JA Biztown curriculum which encompasses financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.

5th/6th English

English class encompasses both writing and grammar. Specific areas of writing include descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. Grammar areas of study include parts of speech, types of sentences, and subject-verb agreement.
