STEM Scouts

Explore your world. Expand your mind. Learn to lead.

STEM Scouts is a brand-new program focused on fun ways for students to learn more about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Using hands-on activities, STEM Scouts also encourages young minds’ natural curiosity and helps build interest in the STEM-related careers that are so crucial to our future economy. SJNCS is thrilled to be a charter school for this pilot program currently only offered in East Tennessee through the Boys Scouts of America. The STEM Scouts program helps instill values and builds character by using BSA methods, such as the Scout Oath and Law, setting and achieving goals, uniforms, leadership skills and adult role models. The program aims to produce young men and women who show leadership, display confidence, realize their skills and limitations, respect others’ opinions, become problem solvers in all aspects of life, look for opportunities to serve others, demonstrate good citizenship and show integrity in all phases of their lives.

Elementary students learn to be creative doing experiments in weekly Lab meetings, take field trips and work with people in STEM careers. They try new things as they work with others, lead teams and communicate results. Elementary-age STEM Scouts have the opportunity to earn participation awards for their weekly activities. SJNCS students in grades 3-5 learn about topics such as chemical reactions, gravity, simple machines, electrical circuits, computer apps, robotics, insects, geocaching, good health, and disabilities.
